Pudong Art Museum

The Pudong Art Museum (MAP), invested, constructed, and operated by Lujiazui Group, was designed by the renowned French architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Jean Nouvel. It began construction on September 26, 2017, and officially opened to the public in July 2021. Located in the core area of the Pudong Lujiazui Binjiang, the museum is a modern six-story structure standing 30 meters tall, extending westward to the banks of the Huangpu River and connected to the Oriental Pearl Tower via a garden square, forming a 30,000 square meter art museum domain. The main building of the museum covers an area of 13,000 square meters, with a total construction space of nearly 40,000 square meters, housing 13 exhibition halls and over 10,000 square meters of exhibition space. The building’s facade and ground are made of Shandong white granite, while the interior space and decoration are inspired by the classic geometric lines of Kazimir Malevich. As a state-owned public art museum, the Pudong Art Museum is an important initiative in building the ‘Shanghai Culture’ brand, carrying the cultural mission and social responsibility entrusted by the municipal and district governments. It focuses on international art exhibitions and exchanges, while also considering domestic art exhibitions, highlighting four major functions: exhibitions, art education, cultural and creative industries, and international exchanges. The museum is committed to becoming a new landmark of Shanghai’s international cultural venues and an important platform for international cultural and artistic exchanges. The Pudong Art Museum collaborates with top art museums and artists from around the world, providing audiences with the precious experience of enjoying world art treasures without leaving Shanghai, striving to become ‘the first venue for internationally renowned art exhibitions in China and a must-visit place for domestic artists.’ The museum has invited the Tate Gallery in the UK to serve as an operational consultant and partner for the inaugural exhibition, and has signed a five-year strategic cooperation agreement with them, planning to launch a major exhibition each year.
