Zhang Yuan is located at the southern end of Taixing Road to the south of today’s Nanjing West Road and to the west of Shimen No. 1 Road. The land was originally farmland. In 1878, it was built into a garden by British businessman Gron. On August 16, 1882, Chinese businessman Zhang Shuhe purchased this garden from Heji Yanghang. The total area is 21 mu. It is named ‘Zhang’s Weichun Garden’, also known as Zhangjia Garden. Since then, Zhang Shuhe has continuously added and renovated this garden. By 1894, the total area of the garden reached 61.52 mu, starting from today’s Nanjing West Road (at Taixing Road intersection), reaching south to today’s Weihai Road, east to today’s Shimen No. 1 Road, and west to today’s Maoming North Road. Opening hours: Open all year round from 10:00 to 22:00.
