Eileen Chang’s Former Residence

Changde Apartment, formerly known as ‘Edinburgh Apartment’, is a seven-story building designed by an Italian architect and built in 1936. The exterior features a light pink color with coffee-colored lines, and despite its location in the bustling area near Jing’an Temple, it remains quiet and low-key. The apartment exudes the musty air of old Shanghai. Upon entering, one can see the old Austin elevator, followed by a dimly lit stairwell, with the walls showing the marks of history. In 1939, Eileen Chang lived in Room 51 of this apartment with her aunt, and in 1942, she moved to Room 65 (now Room 60). During her stay, she wrote famous works such as ‘Love in a Fallen City’, ‘The Golden Cangue’, ‘The Red Rose and the White Rose’, and ‘Seal’. In ‘Notes on Apartment Living’, she talks about everything in this building. Hu Lancheng described Eileen Chang’s life in ‘This Life This World’, which also took place here. The apartment does not open to the public all year round and does not accept visitors other than residents.
