The Songhu Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall is situated within Linjiang Park in Baoshan District, Shanghai. It offers insights into two significant battles that took place in Shanghai during the Anti-Japanese War, namely the ‘January 28th’ and ‘August 13th’ Songhu campaigns, as well as the 14-year resistance history of the people of Shanghai. The location of the memorial hall, adjacent to the Yangtze River and close to the Wusongkou, was once the site of the old Baoshan County town and the main battlefield for both Songhu campaigns. The memorial hall primarily consists of an exhibition area and a commemorative tower. The exhibition area spans three floors, with the first and second floors mainly presenting the history of the Songhu campaigns through text and images, supplemented by artifacts and virtual scenes, illustrating stories such as ‘The Volunteer Army’s Retreat at the Sea Wall’, ‘Courageous Shop Assistants’, ‘The Brave Men of Luodi Town’, and ‘The Young Hero Fangta’s Martyrdom’. The first floor also features a painting exhibition by artist Zhang Mingcao and a film screening room, while the second floor’s auxiliary exhibition hall showcases the atrocities committed by the invading Japanese forces in Shanghai. On the third floor, one can view a large photographic exhibition of the anti-Japanese armed struggle of the people in the suburban counties of Shanghai. Above the fourth floor of the exhibition hall is the tower of the commemorative tower; an elevator ride to the eleventh floor leads to the observation deck, offering a panoramic view of the Yangtze River mouth and an overview of Baoshan city. Adjacent to the memorial hall are the Songhu Anti-Japanese War Battlefield Monument, the ‘Songhu Anti-Japanese War Civilian and Military’ large-scale sculpture, and the ‘Songhu Spirit’ long scroll stone carving theme wall, among other artistic works. The opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 11:00 and 13:00 to 16:30; the memorial hall is closed all day on Mondays and on New Year’s Eve; it is closed every Monday (except for national holidays).
