Former Residence of Mao Zedong

The former residence of the leader is located in ‘Jiaxiu Li’ on North Maoming Road. This is an old house in the architectural style of a shikumen. It is the place where the great leader lived during his ninth visit to work in Shanghai in 1924 (February). At the entrance of the alley stands an archway with the words ‘Jiaxiu Li’. The alley is paved with blue bricks. The inscriptions of the leader’s poems are embedded in the blue brick wall. The residence shows the rooms where the leader and his wife Yang Kaihui lived and some precious materials. The former residence is a two-story brick-wood structure building. The exhibition hall on the first floor today is a themed exhibition room, presenting the leader’s work and life in Shanghai from February to the end of 1924. You can also see a lot about Yang Kaihui and his second son Mao Anqing. There are regular volunteer explanations. By listening carefully to the explanations, you can learn more historical deeds. On the first floor of the former residence, there is a room that is the room of the leader and his wife Yang Kaihui. Inside, there are scenes of their daily life and wax figures of them. You can see the leader sitting by the desk and looking affectionately at his wife Yang Kaihui. His wife is sitting by the bed, holding Mao Anying and coaxing Mao Anqing who is sleeping in the cradle. Another room is the room where the leader’s mother lived when she took care of Yang Kaihui nearby during the childbirth. There is a crib inside. On the second floor, there is an exhibition of picture materials on ‘The Leader in Shanghai’. In addition, this is the only leader’s residence open to the public in Shanghai. It is worth a visit. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday all year round, 09:00 – 11:30, 13:00 – 16:00; closed all day on Monday all year round. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
