The residence of Robert Hotung is the mansion of Robert Hotung, a famous compradore and entrepreneur of foreign firms in Hong Kong, located at No. 457, Seymour Road (now North Shaanxi Road in Jing’an District), in the western area of Shanghai. During World War I, Robert Hotung began to invest on a large scale in Shanghai and sent his son, Ho Sai-kin, to stay in Shanghai permanently to manage business. Robert Hotung’s real estate in Shanghai is mainly located in the area of Broadway Road (now Daming Road), Boone Road (now Tanggu Road), and Miller Road (now Emei Road) in Hongkou. Later, he also purchased some properties near the intersection of Seymour Road (now North Shaanxi Road) and Avenue Road (now Beijing West Road) in the western residential area, including Taiping Garden in Lane 470, Seymour Road. Opposite, at No. 457, he built his own residence. This plot of land covers an area of 17 mu. It was purchased in 1926 and completed in 1928.
