Naozhou Lighthouse

Naozhou Lighthouse is located on Ma’anshan at an elevation of 81.6 meters on Naozhou Island. In 1898, French colonizers constructed this lighthouse, which was completed in two years and two months. It is one of the only two crystal lighthouses in the world and is renowned as one of the three major lighthouses alongside the London Lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse.

The Naozhou Lighthouse stands 23 meters tall, with a base width of 5 meters and a top width of 4 meters. The entire tower is built from麻石 without the use of mortar, with each stone perfectly matched and seamlessly integrated. The lower part of the tower is a square base, the upper part is a conical shape, and the top is a drum-shaped protrusion from the tower body, which houses the lamp room. In the middle of the bottom of the room, there is a sealed, rotatable tray with mercury, supporting the entire lamp frame.

The frame is composed of over 160 curved crystal triangular prisms, forming a parabolic reflector with a focal length of 2 meters. On either side of the frame, convex lenses are installed at the centers of the circles opposite each other. A 400-kilowatt fluorescent lamp is suspended in the middle of the frame. The frame is driven by a motor, rotating at a speed of one revolution every 12 seconds, continuously rotating. The powerful beam of light passes through the crystal triangular prisms at different positions and angles, refracting against each other, and then converging on the two convex lenses, radiating horizontally with a range of 26 nautical miles.

The lighthouse is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
