Zhe Mountain Park is divided into Lesser Zhe Mountain to the north and Greater Zhe Mountain to the south. It is said that Gan Jiang, a legendary swordsmith, once smelted swords nearby, turning the mountains red, hence the name ‘Zhe Mountain’. Neither of the mountains is particularly high, but they are well-vegetated and a favorite spot for locals to exercise in the morning. The park also features an amusement park and a zoo, making it a paradise for children.
Zhe Mountain Park has several entrances including the East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, and Cuiming Garden Gate. On the top of Lesser Zhe Mountain stands the Wuhu TV transmission tower; on Greater Zhe Mountain, there is the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Yi Lan Pavilion, an ancient pavilion dating back to the Ming Dynasty. From the top of the mountains, one can overlook the Yangtze River to the west.
If you are interested in visiting museums, the Hui Merchants Museum is located to the north of the East Gate of Zhe Mountain Park. Its collection mainly features the ‘Three Carvings of Huizhou’ (stone carving, brick carving, and wood carving), as well as a collection of calligraphy and paintings from famous figures throughout the ages. It also includes settings like water outlets, ancestral halls, pawnshops, silk shops, traditional Chinese medicine shops, and the Huaxi Lou.
South of Zhe Mountain Park is the Lu He Village Tea Art Museum, which also primarily features the Three Carvings of Huizhou and offers tea tasting. Next to the museum, Guangji Temple is built against Greater Zhe Mountain and is an ancient temple with a long history. The temple enshrines the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, which is why Zhe Mountain is also known as ‘Little Jiuhua’. The most conspicuous feature in the temple is the Zhe Pagoda (Guangji Temple Pagoda) in the backyard of the Jiuhua Palace, a five-story pagoda built in the second year of the Zhiping era of the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1065).
In addition, the scenic area includes other attractions such as Cuiming Garden, Rose Garden, and Azalea Garden. The West Gate of Zhe Mountain Park connects to the Phoenix Food Street, making it very convenient to enjoy delicious food after visiting the scenic area. The park is open all year round from 04:30 to 22:00.
