Dajueshan, derived from the Buddha in Buddhism, refers to an enlightened practitioner; it is a World Buddhist Natural Cultural Park. Located in ZiXi County, Fuzhou City, Dajueshan is divided into the East and West areas. The East area is centered around a 300,000-acre primeval forest, which is the core of the primeval forest tourism area; the West area is a comprehensive tourist area with religious culture and canyon drifting as its main themes.
Dajue Peak is the core landscape of Dajueshan, resembling the fully enlightened Sakyamuni, amidst layered mountains and steep ridges. The natural scenery of Guanyin is calm and natural, a heavenly gift of beauty, hiding the endless mysteries and wonders of nature. A 30-kilometer sightseeing loop has been created between 300 meters and 1200 meters above sea level, integrating a shuttle sightseeing car, a monorail sightseeing car, cableway, tunnel, and walking trail. The loop tour within the scenic area connects the planned mountaintop temples and cliff landscapes along the way. Hidden peaks, lakes, pavilions, caves, verandas, Tianhu, Tianlu, Tianqiao, Tianyan, Tianquan, Tianmen, Tiantai, Tianjie, Tianjie constitute the wonderful ‘Nine Heavens’ landscape; under the ‘Nine Heavens’ of Dajueshan, eight peaks including Lianhua Peak, Shengui Peak, Bijia Peak, Cuiping Peak, General Peak, Wenqu Peak, Dieluo Peak, and Jingang Peak rise from the ground, forming the ‘Eight Earth’ landscape. Being in ‘Nine Heavens and Eight Earths, a hundred landscapes’, one can enjoy the panoramic view, which is indeed ‘a sacred mountain and holy water, a paradise for the awakened’. Climbing Dajueshan leads to the high mountain cave of Dajueyan Temple, where the sound of Buddhist chants lingers and the smoke of incense swirls. Dajueyan Temple was first built in the first year of Xianhe in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 326), and it has a history of 1700 years. The Tang Dynasty’s eminent monk, the Great Awakening Zen Master from Hangzhou Lingyin Temple, once visited here, meditated, and worshipped Buddha, hence the name of Dajueyan Temple. Dajueyan is a huge granite cave, with a depth of 69 meters, a width of 99 meters, and a height of 19 meters, which is quite rare. The temple consists of seven parts including the Mahavira Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Jialan Hall, forming a comprehensive temple integrating the three teachings. The ‘Eight Immortals Cave’ and ‘Reading Rock’ on the west side of the temple are particularly wonderful.
Dajueshan Ancient Town is located in a deep mountain canyon, witnessing the footsteps of countless devout believers over the years and inspiring the passion of generations of literati. Today, Dajueshan Ancient Town is built on a cliff, taking architecture as its form and culture as its soul, integrating one river, three streets, six alleys, and nine mansions, recreating the style of the Great Song Dynasty, and becoming a place for Zen meditation and leisure vacation, continuing the prosperity of thousands of years.
