Alishan’s Thousand-Year-Old Sacred Tree Ruins

The ruins of the 3000-year-old sacred tree in Alishan, located next to the Alishan Forest Railway’s Sacred Tree Station, now have a new growth of red cypress saplings planted in the same spot, symbolizing the enduring spirit of Alishan’s sacred tree
A red cypress giant in Alishan, over 3000 years old, was discovered in 1906, with a circumference of 25 meters and a height of 50 meters, and was revered as the sacred tree of Alishan

In 1914, the Alishan Forest Railway was fully operational, and the towering Alishan sacred tree along with the forest train passing by became almost a spiritual symbol of Alishan and a well-known landmark in Taiwan and abroad
Unfortunately, it was destroyed by lightning strikes in the 1950s and fell onto the railway in 1997
Authorities, after listening to experts and the public, arranged for the sacred tree to be laid down to return to nature and planted red cypress saplings in its place, to continue the symbol of the ever-lasting spirit of Alishan’s sacred tree
Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day
