Baopiliao is located in Wanhua District, Taipei City. Formerly known as Mengjia, Wanhua was a crucial waterway for transportation during the Qing Dynasty. Baopiliao is situated on the streets of Mengjia, and it is said to be the place where the bark was stripped from the logs brought in by Fuzhou merchants during the Qing era. Strolling through the old street, one can see the winding lanes lined with one or two-story brick and wooden structures. The red bricks contrast with black tiles, and the dark brown wooden doors and windows, along with the Minnan-style arcades, exude an ancient charm. Today, Baopiliao is no longer inhabited, but local authorities have invested over 400 million New Taiwan dollars to renovate the old street, transforming it into a venue for sightseeing, local education, and cultural activities. The street gained fame after being featured in the movie ‘Monga’, attracting a steady stream of visitors and becoming a distinctive tourist attraction in Taipei. Within Baopiliao Old Street, there are many old houses and former residences, such as Dr. Lv Achang’s residence, Zhang Taiyan’s residence during his stay in Taiwan, Fengxiang Bathhouse, Song Xing Hao, Changshou Hao Tea Table Shop, Yongxing Pavilion, Xiuying Teahouse, Weiling Altar, Rixiang Hotel, and Taiyang Printing House. Some spots are set up as scene arrangements, like the roadside porridge stall, which is not in operation but is set up for tourists to take photos and remember the place. Additionally, after visiting the old street, one can walk to the nearby Longshan Temple to pay respects, and if hungry, they can head to the Huaxi Street Night Market next to the temple to taste local snacks. The market offers a unique snake meat feast for those who enjoy trying new culinary experiences. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Accessibility services include wheelchair-accessible entrances and restrooms.
