Overlooking from the northeast of Saladin Citadel, between Al-Azhar Park and Mokattam Hill, stretches a sprawling area of low, dilapidated grey buildings known as the famous Cairo cemetery ‘City of the Dead’, also referred to as ‘Qarafa Cemetery Complex’
This place is the final resting ground for many prominent figures
Unlike ordinary cemeteries, the tombs here are constructed in the style of residential homes
Today, this area has become a slum in Cairo, inhabited by many homeless Egyptian poor who act as custodians for the graves of the wealthy
The site is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day
Essential tips: Due to historical conditions, the security in the City of the Dead is not very good
It is advisable to travel in groups or with a guided tour, avoid venturing too deep into the area, do not linger for long, and refrain from visiting at night
