Jinshanzui Fishing Village

Jinshanzui Fishing Village is the earliest fishing village on the coastal land of Shanghai. It is located on the shore of Hangzhou Bay, on the north side of Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway. It is just a step away from the sea and faces the Jinshan Three Islands in the sea across the sea. The diverse varieties and delicious seafood cuisine are a major feature of the fishing village. The seafood food street and the snacks in fishermen’s inns have their own characteristics, attracting more and more tourists. Jinshanzui is a famous fishing port in Shanghai. In history, marine fishery was very prosperous. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, there were 36 shops and workshops in the small town. There were more than 10 fishery inns that only sold fishery products. During the spring and autumn fishing seasons, when big fish and jellyfish were abundant, tourists and merchants who came to watch the tide, buy fish and do business gathered. The seawall was crowded with people and very lively. In the 1980s, Jinshanzui Fishing Village reached its peak. There were more than 1,000 fishermen going to sea. There were 45 fishing boats of various sizes, with a tonnage of 1,650. The annual output of fishery products was 1.16 million piculs. The fishing range also extended from Hangzhou Bay to the high seas, reaching as far as Diaoyu Island in the south and Jeju Island in South Korea in the north. It was a red flag on the fishery front in Shanghai. However, since the late 1980s, due to the construction of many chemical enterprises, a large amount of sewage has flowed into Hangzhou Bay, and fishery resources have gradually declined. As a result, fishing boats are stranded on the beach and fishermen come ashore. Most fishermen bid farewell to the sea on which they depend for survival. Some work, some do business, and some still miss the sea. While insisting on fishing in the offshore, they have set up businesses such as aquaculture and fishery product processing on land. Some fishermen have also taken advantage of the unique natural conditions and opened dozens of seafood hotels on one side of Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway, forming a unique seafood street. The old street of Jinshanzui has been renovated and new exhibitions and restaurants and inns with marine cultural characteristics such as fishing village museums, fishing gear development, painter’s studios, and fishermen’s inns have been opened. Together with Jinshanzui Seafood City and Seafood Street, it is a tourist attraction on the golden coastline of Jinshan, making the ancient fishing village glow with new vitality again.
