Liuzao Town: A Historical Peninsular Town in the Heart of Pudong

Liuzao Town is located in the central hinterland of Greater Pudong, with its northern region stretching into a peninsula that connects with Chuansha New Town. It is bordered by Zhuqiao Town to the east, just 8 kilometers away from the international airport, and shares a border with Xuanqiao Town to the south. To the west, it neighbors Zhoupu Town. Around the year 1070 AD, most of Liuzao was still submerged under the sea. However, as the Yangtze River carried sediment along the coastline to the south, by around 1140 AD, the area had largely formed into land. In 1172 AD, after the construction of the sea defense dike in Pudong, the land was stabilized. The name Liuzao originates from the ancient ‘salt stoves’, being the sixth in the local ranking, hence the name ‘Liuzao’. As the coastline extended eastward, the once saline areas transformed into arable land, leading to a gradual shift towards agricultural development. Liuzao Town is open to visitors all year round, with full-day access.
