Nanhu is named after its location south of Jiaxing City and is known, along with Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing and West Lake in Hangzhou, as one of the ‘Three Famous Lakes of the South of the Yangtze River’. The area is not only renowned for its beautiful Jiangnan scenery but also serves as an important revolutionary memorial site in modern Chinese history. Sightseeing boats depart approximately every 20 minutes, taking you around the lake in sequence to the various attractions. At each attraction, passengers disembark and wait for the next boat to proceed to the next attraction. There are three main piers along the shore, usually boarding at the Hui Jing Garden on the east side of Nanhu. Apart from the lake island at the center of Nanhu, which requires a boat ride, the other two attractions are on land. You can either make a full circle back to the starting point or end your journey at one of the stops. The first stop on the boat tour is the lake island at the center of Nanhu, where the Yanyu Tower is said to have been a place where Emperor Qianlong stopped during his southern tours, hence its fame. The current Yanyu Tower is no longer the ancient structure but the imitation architecture looks graceful among the surrounding gardens and remains a noteworthy building on the island. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. The famous site of the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Red Boat of Nanhu, is located just in front of the Yanyu Tower on the lake. Many visitors come here to see the birthplace of the revolution. However, the red boat seen today is a later replica with modern interiors. There is an additional fee to board the boat, and photography is not allowed inside. It is usually sufficient to take photos of the exterior from the shore. Additionally, on the lake island, there are the Imperial Stele Pavilion of Emperor Qianlong, Qinghui Hall, and several small pavilions, all of which are worth a casual stroll. The subsequent stops include the Cangsheng Temple on Xiaoyingzhou in the north, commemorating Cangjie and the Stele Garden of Characters, the Water Conservancy Tower and Wu Xiang Temple in the west, commemorating Wu Zixu, among others, which are relatively tranquil but offer pleasant views. Climbing the tall tower allows for an overview of the green trees, weeping willows, pavilions, and bridges in Nanhu, with occasional trains passing by on the Zhejiang-Jiangxi line. Simply walking around the lake at leisure is also a good choice. In recent years, Nanhu has been increasingly well-maintained, with many new small gardens built along the lake, such as four small parks on the east side themed around spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and the Shaoyuan on the south side, which is a beloved urban green space for locals. For those interested in the history of the revolution, the Nanhu Revolutionary Memorial Hall and Hero Monument near Shaoyuan are good options. Additionally, Nanhu Yanyu is one of the ‘Eight Views of Jiaxing’, and the lake scene is particularly enchanting when misty rain envelops the lake. The area is open all year round, 24 hours a day, as an open scenic spot, except for the lake island which requires a boat ride, the rest is free of charge. Service facilities include a parking lot: [Nanhu Scenic Area Parking Lot] with a reference price of ¥20 per visit; located at 100 meters east of Nanhu Ship Cai Hotel on Haiyan Tang Road, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City; the number of parking spaces is subject to the actual situation of the scenic area. Luggage storage: reference price is free. Park transportation: the address is double the distance. Restrooms: there are several restrooms inside the park with clear signs within the scenic area.
