Shanghai is the birthplace of the Communist Party of China, the place where the original aspiration originated, and the place where the great founding spirit of the Party was nurtured. The site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is where the dream of the Communist Party of China set sail and is the spiritual home of Chinese Communists. On July 23, 1921, the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held at No. 106 Wangzhi Road (now No. 76 Xingye Road) in Shanghai, announcing the official establishment of the Communist Party of China. In September 1952, the site of the First National Congress was restored, a memorial hall was established and opened to the public. In March 1961, the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was designated as a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. The Memorial Hall of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is directly under the Propaganda Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee. On June 3, 2021, the brand-new Memorial Hall of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was officially completed. The upgraded Memorial Hall of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China forms a characteristic pattern of ‘one hall and three sites’. With the newly completed exhibition hall as the main core, it comprehensively manages three major historical and cultural sites protected at the national level: the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the former site of the dormitory of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (Bowen Girls’ School), and the former site of the Shanghai Office of the Delegation of the Communist Party of China (Zhou Enlai’s Residence). It is a red palace that tells the story of the founding of the Party, highlights the original aspiration of the founding of the Party, and interprets the great founding spirit of the Party. It houses more than 128,000 collections at all levels from the Opium War to the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The brand-new basic exhibition ‘The Great Beginning – Exhibition on the History of the Founding of the Communist Party of China’ tells the history of the founding of the Party panoramically and leads the audience to deeply understand the rich connotations of the great founding spirit of the Party.
