In March, spring is warm and flowers are blooming. It’s time for the annual flower appreciation season again. In this beautiful season, we specially came to Wuxi, Jiangsu, to admire the famous Wuxi cherry blossoms and enjoy the romantic visual feast. Spring outing and admiring flowers, live up to the spring scenery. This journey is from March 18th to 21st, only four days in total. The round-trip journey takes about one and a half days. In fact, the time for staying and playing in Wuxi is only about two and a half days. However, due to the compact and orderly schedule, in addition to focusing on visiting the Taihu Yuantouzhu Scenic Area, which has the reputation of being one of the three major cherry blossom appreciation resorts in the world, and the newly emerging cherry blossom appreciation resort Nianhuawan, we also visited scenic spots such as the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal, Huixi Park, Huishan Ancient Town, Xue Fucheng’s Former Residence, Qian Zhongshu’s Former Residence, and Gu Yuxiu Memorial Hall. Although the time is short, the harvest is abundant. It not only broadens our horizons but also delights our body and mind. Another short, fast and enjoyable trip. The first stop is the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area (March 18th, D1). Flying from Shantou to Wuxi and checking into the hotel is already 5 pm. We didn’t have time to eat at noon because we were in a hurry to catch the plane. We quickly find a restaurant with local characteristics to fill our stomachs first. Then, after walking a short distance, we come to the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area to play. The Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area is located in the center of Wuxi. Antique water town architecture and old houses from the Ming and Qing Dynasties form a block together. There are scenic spots that can be visited, as well as bars, restaurants, and small shops.
This place boasts the quintessential scenery of a Jiangnan water town, with the canal banks preserving the architectural styles from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today is Saturday, and the weekend scenic area is bustling with a dense crowd of tourists. As night falls, the ancient canal’s old houses with pink walls and black tiles light up, with strings of red lanterns reflected in the canal. The ancient-style buildings on both banks, enhanced by the lighting, are particularly beautiful, attracting many tourists to stop and admire. Tip 1: The scenery of the Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal Scenic Area is more beautiful at night than during the day. You can arrive in the afternoon or evening, first viewing the daytime scenery, and then enjoying the stunning night view. Tip 2: There will be a particularly large number of tourists during holidays, especially in the Nanchan Temple Commercial Street and Qingming Bridge area where it is bustling with people. Choosing to take a cruise ship tour would be more leisurely and interesting. Nianhua Bay is located to the west of Lingshan Sacred Land, farther from the city center. The town style is ancient, with buildings in beige and white colors, covered with green large slope roofs, and doors, windows, and pillars are mostly made of wood. The town is dotted with small bridges, flowing water, and garden landscapes, making it a particularly suitable resort town for vacation and relaxation. Entering Nianhua Bay is like entering a paradise, where everything is both dreamlike and real. Many small scenic spots and the ‘one flower, one world’ fragrant moon flower street have small shops selling small crafts that make you dazzled and reluctant to leave. In spring, the cherry blossoms and other flowers and plants here are really quite a lot and very beautiful, dressing up the scenic area gracefully and charmingly. The scenic area is bustling with tourists, presenting a harmonious atmosphere. We started playing from more than 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, and it took nearly 7 hours to walk around. Here, the air is fresh, the environment is beautiful, and everything makes people feel relaxed and very comfortable. They are set against the scenery of small bridges, flowing water, pastoral scenery, and various buildings, making the scenery very beautiful and eye-catching, and it is also a good place to enjoy cherry blossoms.
2. Lingshan Scenic Area, adjacent to Nianhua Bay, is also a well-known attraction in Wuxi, where one can spend more time visiting both. 3. The town boasts a variety of restaurants offering different flavors; after strolling around, one can sit down to dine and relax, which is very convenient. We decided to enter the park and walked through it, reaching Huishan Ancient Town at the other end. Xi Hui Park, also known as Xi Hui Scenic Area, is a national key park and part of the national key scenic area; Huishan Ancient Town is rich in cultural relics and historical sites, with beautiful landscapes of mountains, waters, forests, and springs. It features over 200 scenic spots, including ancient streets, gardens, temples, springs, academies, poetry societies, and ancestral halls, spanning thousands of years of history. The park contains the famous Jichang Garden and the Second Spring, which inspired the famous erhu piece ‘Moon Reflection in the Second Spring’. Tips: 1. Huishan Ancient Town itself is free to enter, but tickets are required for Xi Hui Park and Huishan Temple (which includes Jichang Garden, the Second Spring, and other attractions). If time permits, it’s worth visiting all of them, and simply wandering around the ancient town is also a pleasant experience. 2. Xi Hui Scenic Area includes Huishan Historical and Cultural District, Huishan Ancestral Hall Group, Huishan Ancient Town, and Xi Hui Park, all of which are connected and convenient to visit together. Surrounded by water on three sides, it offers both the natural beauty of vast mountains and waters with distant sailing boats, as well as the idyllic scenery of rural landscapes with small bridges and flowing water. It is a place of great beauty in the Taihu Lake scenery. Here, you can visit the extensive gardens, take a boat to experience the vastness of Taihu Lake, explore the mysterious realm of Taihu Fairyland Island, and also enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, experiencing the charm of ‘the best of Taihu Lake is Turtle Head Isle’. The blooming of cherry blossoms every spring is a major spectacle here, and the lively Cherry Blossom Festival makes it the most famous cherry blossom viewing spot in Wuxi.
It is said that over 30,000 cherry blossom trees of nearly a hundred varieties are planted in Turtle Head Isle. When in full bloom, they resemble clouds and rosy skies, with a profusion of blossoms covering the trees; a gentle spring breeze stirs, and the falling petals dance, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Therefore, visiting Turtle Head Isle for cherry blossom viewing was the highlight of our trip to Wuxi, with a whole day dedicated to leisurely strolling and appreciating the blossoms. With ample time, one can enjoy a relaxed pace, taking in the scenery and savoring the experience. From shortly before 9 AM until nearly 5 PM, we spent a full 8 hours here. Our only break was a brief rest during lunch at the Hengyun Noodle House near the Cherry Blossom Avenue, where we enjoyed a bowl of pork rib noodles. The early cherry blossoms at Turtle Head Isle typically bloom in early March, mostly with single or semi-double petals. According to the blooming sequence, cherry blossoms are divided into early and late varieties. There are more types of early-blooming cherry blossoms, with a blooming period (from initial bloom to full bloom to petal fall) of about a week. The late-blooming cherry blossoms can have a blooming period of 7-10 days. The interval between early and late blooming periods, affected by the rate of temperature rise, can be 5-12 days, during which some hybrid varieties of cherry blossoms bloom. 2. Generally, in mid to late March, the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms enter their peak blooming period, which is the optimal time for viewing. However, the specific timing of the peak blooming period depends on the weather conditions at the time; if there is a cold air mass, it may delay the peak blooming period. We visited on the 20th, and some cherry blossoms were only partially open, with a few more days needed to reach the peak blooming period. 3. During the peak blooming period, Turtle Head Isle is swarming with people, especially on weekends when the number of visitors is overwhelming. Many roads leading to the scenic area are often congested; if possible, travel off-peak and try to avoid the peak weekend periods. We had to catch a flight back to Shantou at 4 PM that day, leaving us with more than half a day to explore.
Initially, I had planned to visit the more renowned attractions in Wuxi, such as Li Garden or Mei Garden. However, the weather was not favorable due to light rain, making it inconvenient to travel to these locations from afar. I decided to change my plans and visit some smaller attractions near my hotel, including the former residence of Xue Fucheng and Qian Zhongshu’s former residence. I made the most of this half-day by sequentially visiting five attractions: the former residence of Xue Fucheng (one of the representative figures of modern China’s famous thinkers, diplomats, and early reformers), Qian Zhongshu’s former residence (a modern Chinese scholar with a profound knowledge of both Chinese and Western studies, highly respected in the academic world at home and abroad), Wuxi Stele Pavilion, Wuxi Guo Zhuan Memorial Hall, and Gu Yuxiu Memorial Hall (a renowned figure in Wuxi’s modern history known for his contributions in science, literature, and education). Visiting these former residences (memorial halls) is a window to understanding these historical figures, and it’s great to have the opportunity to walk around and explore. Tips: 1. All these attractions are free of charge, which is commendable! Among them, Xue Fucheng’s former residence is quite large in scale and the garden has a distinctive Jiangnan style, which is very pleasing to the eye. 2. These attractions are not far from each other, allowing for convenient and continuous visits.
