Tamsui Fort and Historic Sites

A red-brick castle stands atop a hill, overlooking the Tamsui River estuary; red tiles and white corridors elegantly cast circular shadows in the sunlight; pass through the city walls and ascend to the century-old battery. Tamsui Fort, the Little White House, and the Huwei Battery together perform in this historic town, perfect for leisurely strolls. The red-haired fort, standing for over 300 years in Tamsui, is one of Taiwan’s oldest existing structures and is currently a designated national monument. The castle-style main fortress, the consulate-style official residence, and the southern gate of the Qing Dynasty city gate all serve various functions such as military defense, consular office work, and dungeons. Walking to the square in front of the Red Hair Fort, in addition to taking a photo in front of the premier photography spot of the Red Hair Fort, do not forget to look out at the scenery of the Tamsui River and Guanyin Mountain. One of the eight scenic spots of Tamsui, ‘Sunset at the戍台’, is located here, and the beauty of the sunset is not to be missed. The Little White House, known as the ‘Former Qing Dynasty Tamsui Customs Official Residence’, has a history of more than a hundred years and is named for its striking white Western architectural appearance. When visiting the Little White House, be sure to see the neatly arranged ‘semicircular arches’. When the sunlight shines down, the white buildings will appear even more pure and elegant. This simple Spanish stucco corridor-style building, with its orange roof, is very dazzling under the blue sky. The circular arch corridor design adds a lot of romantic sentiment to the Little White House. The Huwei Battery is located in a commanding geographical position, with solid building materials, creating a grand battery. It can be said to be the premier military fortress of the 19th-century wars and garrisons, and it is also an important modern coastal defense facility in Qing Dynasty Taiwan. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 09:30-17:00; Saturday to Sunday 09:30-18:00 all year round.
