The Humble Administrator’s Garden is a famous garden in Suzhou. The whole garden is centered around water, surrounded by well-arranged rockeries and exquisite courtyard buildings, with blooming flowers and flourishing trees. This exemplary garden in the south of the Yangtze River, along with the Summer Palace in Beijing, the Mountain Resort in Chengde, and the Lingering Garden in Suzhou, is known as the ‘Four Famous Gardens in China’ and has been included in the World Cultural Heritage List. The design of the entire garden is extremely exquisite. Visiting it can be described as ‘a scene at every step’, everywhere reflecting the charm of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. The paths in the garden are winding. From the numerous doorways and stone walls with hollowed-out patterns to every pavilion and every window, none are identical. Moreover, they are perfectly matched with trees, flowers, and grasses, forming picturesque landscapes. You can spend a lot of time taking photos. The whole garden is divided into three parts: east, middle, and west, each with its own characteristics. Especially the middle garden basically maintains the simple and natural style of gardens in the Ming Dynasty and is the essence of the whole garden, which can be carefully visited. The east garden is more spacious, and the west garden has exquisite architecture. At the southern end of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, there is also the Suzhou Garden Museum, which is a domestic garden-themed museum. The main landscapes of the Humble Administrator’s Garden include Lanxue Hall, Hanqing Pavilion, Yuanxiang Hall, Xiangzhou, Thirty-Six Mandarin Duck Pavilion, Bonsai Garden, etc. There are also two very interesting famous scenes. One is the ‘borrowed view of the North Temple Pagoda’. Standing in the east garden and looking west, you can see the North Temple Pagoda one kilometer away, as if it were in the garden. This is a scenery that many tourists will take photos of. The technique of borrowed view can also be seen everywhere in the garden, and you can experience it when visiting. The other is the ‘Flying Rainbow over the Corridor Bridge’ in the middle garden. The vermilion bridge railings are reflected in the water like a flying rainbow. The landscape with this bridge as the main body is very beautiful. Spring, summer, and autumn are all very suitable for visiting the Humble Administrator’s Garden. There is an azalea exhibition from mid-March to early May, a lotus exhibition from early June to mid-October, a chrysanthemum exhibition from early September to mid-October, and a flower and fruit bonsai exhibition during the Spring Festival. There will be fewer people in winter, but you can quietly enjoy the elegant scenery.
