Xuwen Ancient Port

According to the ‘Book of Han’, Xuwen Port is the starting port of the maritime ‘Silk Road’. In recent years, a large amount of archaeological work has confirmed that the current Xuwen County in Zhanjiang is the location of Xuwen Port. The ruins of Xuwen Ancient Port are located in the villages of Erqiao, Nanwan, and Shiwei, Wuli Township, Xuwen County. Since the 1960s, a large number of Han Dynasty tomb groups have been discovered in the villages and fields of Dahuang Township, Huafeng Ridge, and the southwestern coastal area of Xuwen, unearthing a large number of pottery, iron and steel artifacts, and bead decorations. In November 1993, experts from the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology discovered a large area of Han Dynasty living sites in Erqiao and Shiwei villages, Wuli Township, Xuwen County, through large-scale excavations, thereby proving that this place was the location of Xuwen County in the Han Dynasty and the site of Xuwen Port.
